Improving education with Teach For All
A child's socio-economic background continues to be a major factor in determining whether he or she succeeds in school and has access to career opportunities. We work together with the Teach For All global network to help ensure greater educational opportunity and educational equity for children and young people around the world.
Recruiting university graduates to teach at schools
With our support, Teach For All has been able to expand its network to 26 independent national partner organizations who work according to the same model: Young university graduates and professionals with outstanding academic credentials and leadership potential are recruited by Teach For All partner organizations, trained and then deployed as teachers ("Fellows") for a period of at least two years in schools in disadvantaged communities. Over the course of the reporting year, more than 13,000 Fellows touched the lives of approximately 975,000 children and young people around the world.
Targeted personal development measures
Deutsche Post DHL supports Teach For All partner organizations in Argentina, Chile, Germany, India, Peru and Spain with financial support, non-monetary donations and the volunteer efforts of our employees. We support Teach For All Fellows and students in their personal and professional development with mentoring programs, internships and trainings. Some 130 employees served as mentors to young people over the course of the reporting year. Approximately 840 employees took part in partnership activities worldwide.
Education is a human right
As part of our 15-month mentoring program, 80 of our employees provided Teach First Deutschland participants' students with mentoring in all matters related to personal and career orientation. Deutsche Post DHL managers also volunteered their time to serve as mentors for Teach First Deutschland teaching participants.
To support the further development of the educational infrastructure, our employees joined forces with Teach For India to set up a school library and organize a donation drive, which provided several schools with used computers and stationary materials. Several of our managers also volunteered their time to visit classrooms and give a lesson to the students.
A teaching participant in the Enseña Chile program took his students on a tour of a DHL logistics center and administrative office, providing the students with an inside look into a company and its operations.
Together with teaching participants from EnseñaPeru, our employees volunteered their time to teach in schools and organize special events, including a workshop on entrepreneurship and marketing. A select group of our managers also provided mentoring support to EnseñaPeru teaching participants.
As of October 2012, 13 managers are taking part in a mentoring program to provide support for Empieza Por Educar teaching participants. A friendly soccer match provided children and young people from a Empieza Por Educar partner school with the chance to meet and get to know some of our employees.
Our employees visited Enseña Por Argentina partner schools to talk to students about possible career opportunities and about their own experience transitioning from school to the working world.
